How to SEO Your Title Tags for Blogger and WordPress

Today’s Daily SEO Tip is a guest post by Saptarshi from SEO Kolkata.

Most bloggers are satisfied with the default structure of the blog but if you would like to improve yours a little the easiest way is to do it by optimizing the title tag.

The default title structure in most common blog platforms is “Blog Title – Post Title”. What this means is that your most relevant keywords that are in your post title appears towards the end of your page title, carrying less weightage. Also the Post title or a part of it might get chopped off in the SERP due to the character limit.

The ideal way to solve this problem would be to have the Title structure in “Post Title – Blog Title” format.

WordPress and Blogger are probably the two most common blogging platforms and for both of these you can do this by simply tweaking the placement of PHP variables.

For WP, you can use it by manually tweaking the code or you can have even more control on your Page titles by using Plugins like Platinum SEO pack or All in One SEO plugin [note Daily SEO Tips uses All in One].

For Blogger item page title, you can use the following code,
<ItemPage><title><Blogger><$BlogItemTitle$></Blogger> – <$BlogTitle$></title></ItemPage>

Play round with your blogger code a little and you should be able to have customized title for each of your blog pages.

If you need even more details on how to optimize your blogs read the following:

I am partial to the “All in One SEO Pack” plugin for WordPress as you can customize each posts title tag separate from its actual title on the post.

Also, could anyone tell me they have seen this before??? A Wild Boar as a pet!

I used the All In One SEO pack for most of the WordPress themes I’ve used, including Semiologic Pro. I still use it on most of the blogs I operate, except for the one that is using Thesis, as it appears that the SEO tweaks are built in to the theme itself.

My experience has shown that when my blogs have the post tite in the title tag, SEO is improved. I think that alternatively you could put post category, if that’s relevant enough. Having the name of your blog alone in the title is pointless, unless you have an amazing brand like “Coke” but even then the title needs to be followed up with post title.

I believe the All in One SEO plugin stopped being supported by its original author, but was picked up by someone else. So it’s still supported. There was even a new version put out in January.

AIOSEO is a great plug in but don’t forget that you also need to format your internal theme structure to make use of H(x) and ALT tags too.

Too many people think AIOSEO is the only thing you need to do…

I also use the All in One SEO Pack. Placing the title of the post before the name of the blog is also what I do, in order to help the keywords that are near the start of the page title to rank well.

Another thing I try to do is to put no more than 4 or 5 words to the name of the blog, I try to keep it short. By doing this, the title of the post will carry more weight, and won´t be affected by the name of the blog- unless the name of the blog is very keyword-rich. It also serves well to keep the titles under the 65 characters limit, and make them look short and concise.

Love the tip, and a double listing is fantastic for your site, but a word of caution. Plugins such as headspace2 (great SEO plugin) user the wp_title(); function exclusively to display the title tags that you assign from within the headspace plugin page. This could effect the way your title renders out.

Found that out the hard way – spent hours trying all different function combination to get headspace2 to work and all it needed was
