Dig into Your Search Referrals for Content Ideas and SEO

Today’s tip has something to do with my tip on increasing your search ranking by exploring your current positions and search referrals and then interlinking potentially powerful pages.

Friday SEO tip is provided by Alexander Villamizar of Latam SEO.

Keep an eye on keywords people are using to get to your site.  When I check that list for my site, I might find that there are some visits for a keyword that is not on the first page on Google (for example page 3 or 4).

What I do next, if the competition for that keyword is not that high, is to create a new entry at my blog based on that keyword, so that it could rank higher. When the keyword is a bit competitive, I try to tweak some things inside the post, and I also improve my internal linking.

In both cases, I have managed to achieve even two listings on page 1, and obviously got a lot more traffic to my website by doing this.

What tools are you using to track search referrals? How do you organize them? And most importantly, how do you use the data? Please share your thoughts!

  12. I use Google Analytics with a custom filter I got from Distilled’s blog that lets me know when I get a paid 2 or 3 referral. I like to put all my longtail/niche content ideas into a spreadsheet and see who’s competing and how many people are looking. Then, I strategize what ideas I know I can write good content for and prioritize based on relative competitiveness vs traffic.

  14. I use the searchterms in combination with the bouncerate. Where the bouncerate is too high for a certain term, it obviously means that the searcher did not find what he was looking for, so I try creating new content targeted at that searchterm.

  22. You may also consider editing the web page you had already that is getting the referral traffic and see whether you can tweak it to better respond to the kind of long tail queries that are being used for the particular keyword.

Come on, Darren, it is not at all about grammar, it is about SEO, isn’t it?

On a serious note, I tried to edit the post a bit but all in all I prefer that to be up to the original author.

  34. A couple of days ago, SEOmoz had a post on this topic too, saying that an easy way to increase search traffic would be optimize your site’s 2nd page keywords.
So, your site ranks in 11th for keyword1, then optimize such page for keyword1 and get to the 1st page.

Excelent tips. SEOmoz’s and this one.
