Distribute Your Company News For Free
News is a great way to build links and awareness. If you’ve got some interesting news related to your business to share, you can create a press release using paid services like PRweb or you can do it on cheap or even for free (note: the first option doesn’t actually substitute the latter one as you can do both or either of them depending on your money and time resources).
While how to that with PRweb is pretty clear (the service is popular and easy to use, I don’t think I can add much here), let’s discuss some ideas on how to do that for free.
1. Create a social media release: two cool free services allow you to issue a social-media-friendly release. They are both Google news friendly which means more exposure. They also allow free (direct and ‘dofollow’) backlinks from the release hosted on their domains. One is PitchEngine (I’ve mentioned on SEJ) and the other one is PressIt (which is quite new to me but looks not bad).
I can’t say I managed to achieve hundreds of links with the services but if well implemented a press release may attract some attention. By “well implemented” I mean good, news-worthy content and rich media (i.e. images, video, power point presentation, etc).
2. Consider start-up directories or blogs. If you are launching a new project, a mini-site or a tool, contact start-up blogs and most of them will publish your news.
3. Search for sites publishing press releases in your niche. Example: one of the best sites for small business news distribution is SmallBizTrends accepting press release submissions.
You can find similar sites in your niche by searching Google for relevant keywords combined with the following queries:
- inurl:submit press release;
- inurl:submit “press * release”;
- intitle:submit press release;
- inurl:submit inurl:news.

If it really is buzz-worthy news, then you can always write a blog post on it and then tweet your blog post. You then should encourage your friends to retweet it. Multiple RT’s can be very effective.

I’ve submitted press releases using free news distribution sites in the past, but never came across one that offered social media releases. I’ll definitely check out PitchEngine and PressIt next time.
If you have compelling news and you get it in front of an influencer from a social site (e.g. Twitter, Digg, Delicious), it can go a long way!

Free news distribuation is not that easy if you are working in a small language like danish.
I am just testing Google News in german for a client, and is looking forward to see the result.

The only problem with press release links is they tend to be low quality, but they are a great way to start up the linkbait machine if you’ve got great content.

A few years ago I had major SEO success with doing this, but not so much lately PageRank wise. I assume they may have been algorithmically devalued (not targeted, just the engines got a little more particular). But it’s at least a great chance to get your site in front of new eyes who may decide to give you a link of their own.

Hi Bill. Agreed, but the point is not only getting “direct” benefit (i.e. links from the press release site itself) but from sites that pick up the release and re-publish it.

Great rundown, Ann. Never thought about the start-up blogs. Now, I wonder how important it is for a news release to have rich media…

Rich media helps make it a bit more viral. As an example, PitchEngine allows to embed a video clip, and it helps promote the video.
