Thanks for sharing this tip. I usually add social bookmarking links manually in the theme, but it reminded me that I need to do that anyway.

    Thanks again!

For WordPress users, I highly recommend Joost’s Sociable plugin. It includes almost any social bookmarking/sharing service available and you can choose which to include. It’s very useful.

I actually input the Digg submit, Sphinn, and Fetch It buttons manually using their respective codes so those options are more prominent, and also to show the number of Diggs, etc.

I tested lot of plugins that add social bookmarking icons but no ne satisfied my taste. So, I did some research and coded them into theme.

I added 3 most popular services to this and to make sure other are available, I use ShareThis plugin as a dropdown.

    Ann,

I was using a plugin called sociable that would give an option to share on most social platforms like Digg, SU, Reddti ect, However I recently switched to Tweet this because as the name implies it gives you teh option to tweet but also includes support for SU, Delicious, Reddit and Plurk. I liket he way the buttons looke better and they are more prominent.

Also a similar WordPress plugin I use is Referrer Detector What’s cool about this one is that it will only show a button for a certina platform when you user actually visited your site from that platform. i.e. if they came from StumbleUpon it will display the SU button and remind them to thumbs up if they like the article.

Like Gerald, I use the Tweet This plugin. Details are as follows:
Tweet This v. 1.3.9 Adds a “Tweet This Post” link to every post and page. Shortens URLs in advance through Th8.us, eating up only 19 of 140 characters. Customize under Settings > Tweet This. By Richard X. Thripp.

I also use the Tell-a-friend Widget Plugin for WordPress v. 1.0 by socialtwist. I find this particularly good with a large number of options and always use it to create my Del.icio.us and Technorati bookmarks once I have completed the post.

Both of these put handy buttons at the foot of each post.

I use the dofollow plug in to follow commentators links but do not want to follow all of the social links. Anyone know a workaround for wordpress? This problem has kept me from adding the sociable plug in.

I use comment luv to make my reader and poster to get in touch with there last comment and I think this is the best “passife advertising so far to keep my link always tail them wherever they left another post to another site and stated there opinion

  13. Josh Millrod says:

I use Greg Boser’s Dofollow plug-in which works just fine with Sociable. The most recent versions of both integrate without following the social media links.

Great tip, this can be a very powerful tool. I have tried ShareThis and Add to Any, and I prefer Add to Any because it opens an iframe on mouseover, which I think is easier for the readers than having to click on the ShareThis icon. I’ve read good things about Sociable but haven’t tried it.
