Exchange Knowledge For Mutual SEO Benefit

Today’s tip is by Craig Sumsky of Cutting Edge DJs. I found this a good refreshing tip on how to network with people from “neighboring” niches for mutual benefit.

I own a DJ company in Philadelphia.  I added a blog to my website in late 2007 and began my quest for SEO sometime in mid 2008. One of the greatest stumbling blocks I found was that many of the folks in my industry were still networking the old-fashioned way (industry luncheons, business card exchanges, etc) and very few of them had any idea about SEO, much less the benefits of blogging, tagging, linking etc and how they could have a positive impact on findability(sp) and just the ability to do business in a new and fun way.

Over time, I was able to isolate and identify the people in my industry (photographers, videographers, event planners and facilities) who did participate and understand the basic concept of SEO, and we began our own networking group… P.I.M.P. (Philadelphia Internet Marketing People) and began to meet regularly to share information, as well as continually emailing one another with tips and ideas.  Over a short time we have been able to educate and share so many valuable ideas amongst each other that it has been to the benefit of all involved.  We have introduced people to concepts of social online networking, as well as tools like twitter, blogs, facebook and others that they were frankly unaware.

My ‘tip’ is to find the people in your industry, in your city or town even, and begin a dialoge with the folks that will create mutually beneficial links, participate in your blogs and give critical advice, support and assistance.  SEO is a new ‘thing’ (science/art) and not only are business owners often not ‘in the know’ but they are typically very open to learning and show their gratitude by sharing the wealth.

Have you ever tried this (or similar) tactic? Please share your experience!

Good content. Just wanted to add some points here that may be helpful for those looking out for professional SEO services. There are tons of SEO companies offering different SEO packages and solutions at highly competitive rates. However, when looking our for these services, its important to not only look at the affordability factor but also what is unique about their SEO service and what differentiates them from other companies.

While choosing an SEO company its equally important to analyze the SEO company’s website in terms of their Rankings, Yahoo links, Google index, Alexa ranking and similar such factors which indicates the company’s expertise in the field of SEO. So make sure you are doing enough research and smart work before investing your advertising spend.

Of course networking with your peers in the same or adjacent niches doesn’t necessarily involve travel. Find them on Twitter and get in touch by following them. With a little effort you can develop a growing list of friends/followers. You may then even want to set up some kind of association by setting up a Ning website or even a Google Group.
