Hide Your Backlinks with Mini Sites

*The guest tip was provided by Pradeep Sahu*

My excel sheet, containing list of blogs, social bookmarking sites and forums that allowed me to get dofollow backlinks,  used to be a great SEO asset. Not any more. With the release of tools like open site explorer, the competitive advantage that I enjoyed because of that list has become close to zero. Any competitor can now put my website into the tool and get information about all my dofollow links within seconds.

Backlink analysis tools have been there for quite sometime. But the noise in the form of nofollow links used to make the process of backlink analysis quite time consuming and frustrating. Regaining that confusion is the objective of this simple but powerful seo strategy.

Simply create a small number of websites with themes related to your main website. Build the free backlinks to these individual sites and then link to the main website from these individual sites.

The success of the method depends upon the execution. Following are some key points to keep in mind while executing this strategy

  1. Do not create websites with the sole objective of building backlinks to your main website. Behaving like a link farm is the fastest way to get out of Google index. Always create websites that add value to the visitor on their own. Creating a link to your main website should be just an added benefit.
  2. Do not concentrate all your backlinks on a single micro site either. The idea is to confuse the competition by splitting the links across multiple websites.
  3. Maintain a natural link profile for the micro sites. Natural link profile will require fair share of nofollow links, anchor text variation, moderate rate of link growth among other factors.
  4. How much of link juice flows from the micro site to the main site depends on the total number of links on the linking page. Minimize the number of outgoing links on the homepage to get the maximum value. Please remember that it is no longer possible to preserve link juice by using the nofollow tag.

  2. So much work for a ineffective and kind of spammy solution… Not a horrible idea if you already have the sites in place, but just to build them for this purpose is excessive. I mean, you have to get those sites to rank too for it to be worth anything.

I have seen large number of posts complaining about how link analysis tools are taking the value out of diligent link building. I spend hours trying to come up with a linkbait idea. The first four fail and the fifth one succeeds. I am happy till my competitior identifies the successful one and comes up with something similar. Personally I do not like it.

I had this idea that may help us to protect our links against such tools and thought I shall share the same with the community to get your feedback and suggestions. I appreciate the fact that it might not have been of the quality that you have come to expect from DST. However I hope you will wish the spirit with which I had written the post. Trust me it was not simply getting that link and that is why I had asked Ann if she is ok with adding the ink or not.

Will try to come up with a better post next time. In the mean time request you to stay on topic and try to give suggestions about how we can hide our backlinks from the increasing number of backlink analysis tools

Well if it’s just about hiding i would prefer a simple 301 forward.. That’s much more effective in my pov..

  8. I would still think your excel list holds some value. It is one thing to see how many backlinks a competitor has but it’s another to try and match that number of backlinks to your own site. Regardless of this, I like your tip about building links to mini sites then linking back to the mother ship.

  10. I am not really clear on why one would want to hide one’s links. From my experience there is very little correlation between a link pointing to a competitor and the likelihood that I can replicate that link for a client. Therefore, I am not too worried about my competition trying to replicate my links. I certainly would not set up mini sites just for that purpose, although there are other reasons why one might want to set up mini-sites.

I agree with David. If I want to get the same link that my competitor has, it still takes work to acquire it and sometimes it isn’t always possible. While creating mini sites is a definate way to create a competitive advantage over your competitors, I think it’s too much work to create valuable mini sites (unless you have people working for you). These websites could easily be interpreted as spam and I don’t think it is worth the risk to acquire a few unique backlinks.
