Well according to me if anyone wanna be a link builder so he or she can become a link builder. I have learned alot from Daily SEO Tip about SEO and Link Building both.
I know I am a little biased here, but I always recommend you call the company too. If you cannot reach them by phone, that is the first warning flag. If they answer the phone, do they sound knowledgeable and professional? IMO too many SEO agencies and link building companies are hiding behind email accounts.

Grossly misleading generalization IMO !
2) The link command at Google gives only random sample of backlinks. How can you use it to judge true linking strength of a domain?
A good link building company is the one which can think beyond the “commodity links” and is able to pull it off by producing superior content – linkworthy enough to command links from .edu. .gov and authority blogs/portals in the respective vertical.

Good quality directories under editorial control (which accept paid submissions with no guarantee of inclusion) still have value IMHO.
A search for “www.yoursite [dot] com” -site:www.yoursite [dot] com in Google will give better results than the LINK: search
I would also add that, link building should:
- Not appear to be natural it should (where possible) be natural.
- Links should come from diverse sources (i.e. not just low value directories)
A specific resource for free link building is linknami.com, where you can use text links and contextual one way link tools to get more quality backlinks to your website/blog and internal pages (deep links).
Some of the spam comments advertising the services are so relevant here that I didn’t delete them (just removed the links).
