Improve Internal Linking with an Anchor Text Glossary

The following tip was kindly provided by Matt Leonard, follow Matt on Twitter or watch his awesome contributions on SEJ!

Suppose you’re trying to rank for a specific keyword or phrase. You have your page targeted, you’re focused and now it’s just a matter of time.

You’ll obviously want to optimize your internal anchor text, but how can you do that in scale and insure ongoing consistency? Can you be certain others contributing content know what the preferred anchor text is for a given page?

The answer is yes. You absolutely can, and must, leverage other departments to continue adding new links whenever naturally possible. If you have the advantage of new content, here’s how to rally the non-SEO troops.

Create a list of priority URLs in Excel, along with the preferred anchor text linking to each, and distribute it to anyone responsible for creating content. Make sure they understand the importance of precision. That way, there is never any confusion as to what anchor text should link to what page.

You’ll find it’s extremely helpful to others that may not have SEO first and foremost on their mind (they do exist). They will appreciate it since you’re giving them one less thing to think about. After all, can you really blame others for linking the wrong terms when you haven’t given them an easy-to-use list of the correct ones?

Is an ‘anchor text glossary’ part of your SEO arsenal? Is there actually any such thing as an ‘anchor text glossary’? Probably not, but please feel free to leave a better name in the Comments section below and I just may change the post name. Otherwise, please let others know if you have any related experiences to share. As always, your comment may be our next tip.

  6. You must be psychic… that’s exactly what I do when I plan a new site.

I don’t distribute the list, but it keeps me focused on what I’m trying to achieve for each page and which pages are my landing pages.

  14. This is a great way to make sure everyone is on the same page. A variation of this is to actually make a page on your site that serves as a glossary for visitors. You can have a list of terms that are actually your anchor text linking to the appropriate pages, with a definition or description of each one next to it. That way, this page will effectively serve as an index to the rest of your site.

  28. This is the most important on-page factor for a website. Apart from this i use H1 and H2 tags for most of these keywords to get better ranking for the keywords. when comparing interlinking with H1 and H2 tags, tags get the better response from the search engine spiders for your website.

  30. I agree with CAP, internal linking is vital. You can improve your rankings by optimizing your internal linking alone, it worked for me.

Remember to keep your anchor text natural, make it obvious what the user is going to see by clicking the link. SEO is one thing, but what is its use if you have incredibly low conversions because of a hard to navigate site?

I also recommend using a Google wiki or docs account to track this stuff.

  44. Yes, internal linking strategy is one of the important factor to conduct efficient SEO. But, for this purpose one has to be able to create quality and organized content. Also, the content creator should be able to keep track and remember what he/she has written before in order to make internal linking look natural.

  46. You really don’t need to do anything to that gun. It has full metal internals and has high FPS. Actually, I’d get a tightbore barrel and a good hop-up bucking for accuracy. Those are pretty easy upgrades and help out with accuracy a lot. And maybe a MIAD grip for comfort (the stock M4 hand grip is too small IMO). Hope this helps!

  74. In optimizing keywords, focus and priority should be given to it. And it’s better to have your targeted keyword on a list, in order for you to have a guide. And seeing how interested parties in a certain topic, aside from the fact that they are not yet aware that your website is in existence, they will surely depend on the keyword that they have in mind. And as a clue, better choose a keyword that’s just common, and before considering that certain keyword, check for whether it’s competitor is not that high..for you to beat other with that keyword too..

Off lately, I have just begun to practice linking to myself, or deep linking. I try not to overdo it, just two or three internal links that relate to the current post.
