Keyword and Niche Research with Yahoo! Answers

We’ve recently had a couple of tips here on brainstorming for new keywords with general Google search and  Wordtracker’s “Keyword Questions” tool.

And here’s another idea to get more keyword ideas: use Yahoo! Answers (hat tip to Dave).

Clearly, Yahoo! Answers have been largely overused recently for (self-)promoting but there’s still huge value there. Look at it as an additional provider of keyword phrases as well as an important source of information on what questions your target audience is willing to discuss:

Also, to make the most of it, don’t forget to use the advanced search that (except for basic boolean operators) offers quite a number of useful features:

  • Choose the category;
  • Look only for open questions (e.g. to add your answer);
  • Set the date range:

    Very good tip! No social poll but just q./answers analyzing in the web. I think this can be not just Yahoo! but also other services differentiating in each area. Thanks!

    I’ve been answering SEO questions on Yahoo Answers for a few weeks now. It’s pretty depressing. There are so many scammers in that category, both asking and answering. Even some of the top contributors are giving outdated or incoherent advice.

    I’m quite a fan of Yahoo Answers – it’s generated tons of natural backlinks to my informational websites (i.e. no self promotion!) and gains a fair amount of traffic.

    Like the last post here, it’s also great for finding frequently asked questions in your niche.

    I really like this idea… going to the “source” for keyword ideas, rather than relying on Google or any of the various keyword programs to tell you what keywords to use.

    Well done!

    I think this is a great idea too. This way you can see what people are actually looking for and address that niche. Not only that but you can see what type of terminology they are using to find what they’re looking for. Very clever out-of-the-box technique! -Jane
