Let’s Experiment with Blog Commenting Links

Having learned so much from the endless list of SEO gurus out there I only thought it just that I should share something in return.

What’s your take on blog commenting links are they really worth the effort if you are looking to increase SERP’s for you or your client’s websites?

Blog commenting links are rather frowned upon these days as being a somewhat primeval form of link building agreed they can help to direct new and targeted traffic to your site but do they help with SERP’s? This question has and is much debated on various SEO blogs around the globe and so I thought I would put it to the test. My hope is that blog comment links do in fact help with SERP’s but that is unimportant for the good of the SEO community I feel I should conduct the very best research I can.

I shall have 4 different groups of websites (variables) the first I shall build no links to, the second shall only have blog comment links, the third only other links and the forth shall have a combination of blog comment links and other links. I shall be building the same quantity links to each website at the same time.

If you would like to find out more about this experiment/test please visit my blog commenting experiment page where I share more details regarding how I propose to carry this out

I shall look forward to reading and perhaps reporting the results of your experiment, Ewan. Then I shall know if this comment is good for SEO or just because I like to run off at the mouth. Er, at the fingers. :-)

Make sure you are commenting on blogs that have disabled the nofollow attribute in the comments… I had a list of blogs I would comment on regularly only to find out that only 22% of them were Do Follow.

Since WordPress defaults to the nofollow attribute in comments, most new bloggers don’t know they are not following links and many seasoned verterans don’t care that they are not giving any link love…

Also if you comment on blogs that are do follow and have the CommentLuv plugin enabled AND they are in your niche… you can really boost your linking power.

  4. Briana says:

It could help, but it all depends on if the comments have a nofollow tag. I use Google Chrome and downloaded the extension, iPageRank, which highlights all links that are nofollow in red. It gives me a heads up, depending on if I want to 1) work on my PR, 2) get some link juice, or 3) just want to comment &/or get some traffic. I wouldn’t rely heavily on it, because it’s so 1 sided, but it definitely is a double positive

I’m gonna go over check on your current findings Ewan – this is a cool analysis to be doing!

Heather mentioned the Commnet Luv WP plugin – top notch commenting plugin to have installed so I ALWAYS look out for that when I’m looking to do some blog commenting. It can add so much on just a basic comment where you get your own name as the do follow anchor text, or that and the date. Note that the Daily SEO Tip blog here does not have it installed…

However, there is no harm in spending a little time in building some nodofollows – you gotta mix it up really or else old Goog may see something a bit odd in the over-all linking patterns. Not to go specifically for nodofollows however. Not perhaps the wisest way to spend a few hours of any day.

As a further note to Briana’s mention of the iPageRank add-on, I think we all know now about the add-on for Firefox, right? The NoDoFollow tool, which does the same job by the sound of things.

It would also be helpful Ewan to have trialled just a blogroll type of backlink set up. I’m reading so much about blogrolls and their ability or disability to improve linking potential. I myself have grave doubts about their over-all benefits. But it would be useful to be able to see some stats on it.

Thanks for your offering to do this study Ewan – great idea!

    Regards
    Joseph

Many webmasters are insistent that the links have the attribute “nofollow” which are entrusted to them, so they are useless for SEO. Remember that comments are not meant for SEO, advertising, and a link building. They are intended for discussions. Due to the amount of spam on these blogs, search engines have no choice but put in a sort of algorithm to help detect spammy links. But if you are commenting as a human writer, you have nothing to worry about. Search engines reward always content which are written by humans for other human readers. Here are the 3 simple steps to obtain the higher rate of approval for your blog comments.

Commenting and posting links is something that has been there for a long time. Although they are slowly becoming outdated they still have the capacity to improve your rankings. It all also depends on how hard you worked in order t=for you to see results.
