Let’s Create the Ultimate List of Keyword Research Tools
We do know how important keywords are for any website. We do keyword research prior to developing and launching the site and we keep analyzing keywords throughout the whole site existence.
And there’s no denying the fact that we can’t do without keyword research tools. Which ones are you using? Please let’s (try to) stick to the following rules in the comments:
- Each comment should contain a tool (please no “Thank-you” comments – just to make the list more usable);
- If you have a keyword tip to share, please submit it here.
Thank you!!!

I only use the Google Keyword Tool. That’s fine for my purposes although I’m sure the professionals use a number of different paid services and then amalgamate the results

Emails from your current and prospective customers, trade journals, newspapers, your competitors’ websites, your serverlogs and your daily life.
Since no one has mentioned it, I use http://www.thesaurus.com to help me get ideas. Sometimes I see something that’s a real gem that the keyword sites miss.
Although they have a few tools, I am fond of the term-extractor and term targeting tools at SEOmoz:
http://www.seomoz.org/term-target
http://www.seomoz.org/term-extractor
They work well for competitive analysis
I love my internal site search. Usually I’ll find a word (category, term, slang…) and then apply every relevant modifier in the book to it. Additionally, I find Google Insights useful and of course the Google KW Tool. This also may be an appropriate time to take a cheap shot at Yahoo for killing the Overture KW Tool (for the old-timers).
What about Googles Search Based keyword tool for use with adwords accounts Search-based Keyword Tool

Don’t forget about WordStream: the keyword researcher’s keyword research tool, which harvests keyword and query data from your own, private log files.

The one free keyword search tool that seems to be under everyone’s radar, but I usually use first is Spacky (www.spacky.com).
It doesn’t have as many features as Google but it provides a quick overview of related search terms and the number of searches for:
Google
Yahoo
MSN
All in one tool. I also use Google Adwords, and sometimes Yahoo’s search tool.
One thing about WordTracker. I think it sucks, unless you’re using it for very popular searches. The data itself is extrapolated by two search engines no one’s heard of, and it ‘predicts’ Google’s number. Why not just get the actual numbers from the source itself (Google).
Here’s my comparison of Google KeyWord Tool VS WordTracker.
Seems like there just aren’t too many quality free keyword tools out there.
Regards

Google Insights, Google Trends, MSN Keyword Forecast. In addition the best keyword research can be done from your competitors who provide similar services as you would and analysis on their keywords is worth.
Besides Google’s keyword tool, I like Google Trends, and Insights. I also like to use Market Samurai,

I use pretty much most of the tools listed here Adwords, Insights, Wordtracker, almost most of them…but the best tool as Gerald says is the brain both yours and the competitor’s one…hehehe
here is the tool which I would like to add: http://www.spyfu.com/
My favourite is http://actualkeywords.com/ – not only because I own it, but cause it’s really cool. Also free tool is great: http://actualkeywords.com/freekeywords.aspx
Don’t know if you could call it a tool (well some of them are!) but let’s not forget your clients, the people you work with and friends and family. Sometimes the people who know the least about product X or service Y can come up with the simplest, yet most interesting keywords
Also I’m surprised no one has mentioned Google Analytics (or any other Analytics package) yet. Great way of seeing which keywords people actually use to find your website (sometimes the ones you least expect).
I pretty much only use the Google Keyword Tool but using yours and the clients brain for ideas can be good too. The Google keyword tool works well enough for me most of the time but maybe I can try other tools listed here.
I usually use Google Keywords and Insights. Been too busy to try out others but seems like there’re quite a few out there based on some of the comments.
another one keyword tool

Traffic-Travis is another helpful tool as well. It is not only a keyword tool but it also helps in suggesting on what words to use. Plus, it provides statistics in terms of the daily searches that keyword gets. It is also the same with Google Adword External tool but I find Traffic-Travis to be much easier to use.
I got this useful information from this site http://onlinesellingdomination.com/ebook/.

I use combine IBP, Google keyword tool my human touch, it works well enough for me.
Of course, the Google tool is the best. I also use: MS Ad Intelligence, our AdWords search query reports, our analytics reports, and some of the other tools mentioned above.
Hey nice tool, But you can also used google keyword tool to search keywords for your websites. informative post. THanks
Consider also tag clouds on blog networks, social bookmarking sites and larger news sites and portals. Quintura.com is an interesing one in this regard, too.
To remind myself of how people search, I occasionally use Dogpile Search Spy: http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl/searchspy/ (And it’s just plain fascinating to see what people are searching for; sometimes even creepy.)
Last, my English degree also comes in very handy.
I once sent out an email to my clients asking what words they’d use to search for me. Not all of them responded, but the ones who did provided incredible insight.
well, i’m starting to use an unusual tool for this matter: Google Wonder Wheel.
Anyone wondered this use for that tool? =)
Frank Marcel’s last incredible blog post..Google SEO. Sim, o Google usa SEO!
http://www.quintura.com is a good idea tool… I got to be honest, I have always been a fan of the Goog’s keyword tool… Spyfu is an OK application… SEO book sometimes has value if looking for ideas as well.
Find out which keyword drives traffic to your competitor
website, use these 2 tools from Compete and Alexa.
Compete Search Analytics – Find out which keywords are sending traffic to a website (your competitor) / category.
Alexa Site Lookup – Which gives you the top keywords driving traffic to a website from search engines. updated monthly by Alexa.
I find that I get good results using a combination of keyword tools. I like the free Wordtracker, SEO Book and the Google tool. When I want to look up keywords or phrases, I take a look at all three to compare results. This helps me decide if a keyword or phrase really gets enough searches to warrant using it. Great information here!
Keyword tools make work quite easier for webmaster to choose relevant keywords for websites. Google keyword tool and wordtracker are best providing keywords. You Must check and you have provided great info indeed
Google adwords, seo tool’s keyword discovery, wordtracker (free edition) and of course web analytics tool which is giving us valuable information of keywords and which also helps in bringing traffic towards website. Another reason for using web analytics tool is some time we can get visits traffic from those keywords which are not in our targeted list after all our main aim behind keyword research is to get traffic and business leads.
Thanks. Good post.
I think the Google Keyword Tool is pretty much all you need. I use WordTracker occasionally and actually the results are quite different from Google KT but you could really get by fine with just Google KT.
Stumbled across a new one not too long ago. http://raven-seo-tools.com . Although I havn’t tried it personally I have to say it does look pretty promising. The site certainly looks good to say the least lol.
Overall some pretty good recommendations so far.
I generally use these tools.
