Make the Most of Related: Google Search Operator
Per my experience, RELATED: is one of those Google advanced operators that are understood by only few people and thus are rarely used. However it is very useful and I for one use it no less than a couple of times a week.
Therefore I decided to share how to use this Google search operator:
Red Flag
Use it to find (bad) link neighbors: RELATED: operator shows any page co-citation: i.e. what other resources are linked to from pages linking to a given site / web page.
So if a site link profile is full of paid (irrelevant) links, RELATED: operator will show that:

This comes in handy if you are going to buy an established domain to host your new project, or when you are doing competitor or backlink research.
Besides, that’s another way to tell if a link is gold or rotten.
Discover Relevant Resources
I use RELATED: operator if I need to find more similar sites for my post or list. In this case, that’s an awesome tool for bloggers who want to do a topic research.
Any more ways to take advantage of Google RELATED: search operator? Please share them!

Make the Most of Related: Google Search Operator
I utilize many of the operators each week, but had never utilized the Red Flag that’s used to “find a bad neighbor.”
I like the way it works and will be utilizing it as suggested, but also when buying expired domains to double check their viability in yet another way.
Thanks for yet another helpful tip!

Google tend to think that if 2 websites are linked from the same page they are related.
Not a search I’ve used in the past, but I can see how it brings up useful information. Even if it may be slightly flaky in operation, it’s worth using as a starting point.

Good going Ann! I rarely use this related: operator. Good info once again. Have you done further tests on the operator? I mean, we already know that Google shows ramdom info on link: and site: operators, so probably related: returns ramdom results too, right?

I’d say *not random* but partial / not complete (because random sounds as incorrect). It is almost impossible to find that by testing (unlike with links: we know how many links there are but we can’t know how many sites Google considers to be related). But I am pretty sure Google only shows a sample of report for related: operator either.

This is really off-topic, but you are a clever bunch
– Do you know of a service which will enable me to load a mirror web site if my current site goes down for any reason, such as a power outtage on the original host server? Ideally a service that would detect when my web site goes off line then automatically switch to and upload a mirror site? Thanks
Hello,
Sorry but I don’t understand the tricks. Could you please leave a full example ?
:p
Interesting, I haven’t used “related” before and after trying it out I’m still a little bit confused about what it actually shows. But from your description it really is a good way to check for “bad neighbors.” Thanks for this info, I’ll play around with it some more.
Thanks for the info, Here is another site: Google advanced operators. You can search only one website with this operator. For example If I want to search twitter related bookmarks in digg, I can use Twitter site:digg.com
does ‘related’ mean inbound link ? or related means the same topic ? Confuse…….d
For example related:wired.com, will find websites related to the wired.com website.

Will this be helpful in all the cases. I don’t think so. Bcoz for my site i could not get the most related site from the related operator from Google.
In this case i might be going in a wrong way to make google understand my service and give out related websites. So please could you give my some tips here or in the upcoming post, regarding the Google ways of identifying website related to my website.
Thanks for the info, Here is another site: Google advanced operators. You can search only one website with this operator.
I am confused …could some one post an full example for this operator ?
Good post! I plan to move into this stuff after I’m done with school, as most of it is time consuming. It’s a great post to reference back to. My blog needs more time to gain in popularity anyway.
Thanks for the info
