SEO Has Taken Over My Life
When you start writing SEO articles no one tells you that it is going to take over your life. It seems like just another job after all, doesn’t it? I used to work for a bank and then an insurance company and neither of these things took over my life, so why would SEO be any different? I had a sit down to think about this the other day and came up with a few ideas to try and explain why I have been feeling this way recently.
Everything Reminds Me of You
I have to confess that I see everything in keyword phrases now. The defining moment was a bit like the scene from the Matrix where the binary script (or code or whatever it was, sorry I wasn’t really paying all that much attention) behind the action is revealed to our hero and he starts punching the bad guys and catching bullets with his ears. I suddenly started seeing how you need to think in order to come up with all of the variations of a phrase which internet users might type in. Now things have gone a step further and when my wife asks me to fetch the tomato ketchup I usually mutter, “Tomato ketchup, tomato sauce, ketchup sauce, homemade ketchup, low fat tomato sauce…” The good news is that she no longer asks me to fetch things.
Working Hours
Working from home on flexible hours is a great thing without any shadow of a doubt. Breakfast in bed at 2pm and a midnight stroll at 6 in the morning are the way forward for mankind I believe but there is also a less positive side to this affair. The tough part is that it can be difficult to switch off and forget about the work when you want to. Personally I don’t mind this aspect the majority of the time but there are some moments when I would quite like to think about something else for a change. I have tried going for a walk, taking a shower and even munching on a snack but after a few minutes I tend to get back on the case again, whether I really want to or not. It is great for taking your mind off problems I guess.
It Is Fun
Perhaps the most important factor is that working on SEO projects is simply good fun. People who have never done the job might think that these are the ramblings of a sad geek but they aren’t. It is something which is hugely satisfying and interesting. Not only do you have to try and find ways of moving a site up the search engine rankings, you also need to keep it interesting for yourself. When it comes to writing SEO articles it can be a challenge to write something entertaining about vacuum cleaners or memory foam mattresses but this is part of the enjoyment of it for me. Sometimes when I start writing I am feeling a bit down or lacking in inspiration. A couple of hours later I am often buzzing away because I have found some good ideas or slipped a sneaky wee joke into a serious article. This never happened to me in the bank or in the insurance company so I will also be grateful that SEO has taken over my life.

9-5 I work in SEO – as soon as I get home I start working on my affiliate projects. I can really related to the addiction side of SEO, checking your rankings on an hourly basis and constantly scouting for the latest and greatest tips from evangelists. The advent of mobiles and tablets really hasn’t helped quell the addiction I must say haha.
The part about seeing all of life in keyword phrases is a little unnerving. I wouldn’t like it if it was directed toward me. It’s just as well that your wife no longer asks you to fetch things, but how long will it be before she stops addressing you at all?
