SEO Jobs for All Types of People

If you have found this post after receiving a LinkedIn Sales Message from a company called ZENO, please notice that their links have been omitted from this post because of  complaints and unethical spamming of this site.

Rugby is a great game, isn’t it? Being of a rather modest build I wasn’t the most athletic kid in school and tended to steer clear of most of the rougher sports. Then, one fine day, a kindly gym teacher explained to me that rugby was the game for me.

On the face of it this seemed like a ludicrous suggestion. Even a naïve youngster like me knew that scrawny little kids who couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag couldn’t match up to the lumbering giants who play this game. Ah, but then he explained to me that there are positions on the field for all sorts of different types of physique.

He gave me a try as both a scrum half and a fly half and I realised that I could play this great game without ending up with a brace on my neck after every game. I thought about this story again the other day when I was considering how I ended up working in SEO without being a computer geek. Just like rugby, this industry welcomes lots of different types of people.

Creativity Required

I have always considered myself to be a fairly creative person. In fact, I might even have pestered the BBC with the odd sit com script in my youth (the one about the zoo keeper who is afraid of animals could still make it if I re-work it a little) if I am being honest. This turns out to be one of the most important attributes for anyone involved in the writing side of SEO. As well as having to write articles and add interesting comments to blogs you need to come up with creative ways to boost your site’s rankings. Doing this on an on-going basis can be pretty tiring and if you can still come up with interesting ideas about vacuum cleaners and exercise bikes after a couple of weeks of working on them then you will do fine in this industry.

Research and Analysis Skills Needed

I have to confess that doing a lot of research and analysis isn’t really one of my strong points. I think this is because I used to work as an analyst in a bank and I kind of got bored with this kind of work. The good news is that in SEO I can leave this to the people who enjoy it and concentrate on writing about my failed sit com career and my rugby experiences. If you enjoy keeping up to date with the latest developments in the industry then you will find lots of opportunities to investigate the latest algorithm changes and what techniques are and aren’t working.

Good Communicator and Salesperson

While someone is busy being creative and someone else is doing all of the research who is going to speak to the customers and try to find new ones? In small companies it might be the same person doing all of these jobs but often the work will be divided up among several people. If you are great selling and communicating then there could be a role for you in the SEO world.

Computer Programming Skills

For a lot of people SEO is something which people do in darkened basements while playing Dungeons & Dragons and talking in Klingon. I have to confess that I don’t know a single word of Klingon, have never played Dungeon & Dragons and don’t even have a basement. However, if programming computers is your bag of fun then there are lots of opportunities to get involved in SEO. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that even if you don’t have a lot of computer skills you can still make a career out of this.

Getting a good SEO salesman is SO hard to do. Either they don’t tend to understand what SEO really does so they can have that conversation with clients, or they over sell everything.
