Some Backlinks Deserve to Have Their Backs Scratched

In the SEO game, people spend a lot of time and effort building backlinks. They bait them.  The buy them.  The trade them.  The phone for them.  They offer free samples for them.  They offer their bodies for them (Ladies, I am still waiting for this one to happen to me).  They even guest blog for them.  Clearly links are very, very valuable assets.  So what do you do to build on that value.

How about linking to them?

Yes, how about building backlinks to your backlinks?  Yes, I know – you are excited.  I here you shouting with glee: “Yay I just built 1000 backlinks to my site.  Why not build a thousand backlinks to each of them?  Woohoo!  Another 5,800 more hours of linkbuilding work to do!”

Well, not quite.  I am not suggesting you build massive links to pages that link to your website.  A few will do just fine.

Nor do I suggest building backlinks to every page that links to your website.  There are three types of backlink pages (and perhaps more that I am not thinking of at the moment) that deserve a little extra link juice.

1.  A page that makes a great landing page for your business. I have seen many webmasters complain about their website being outranked for a keyword by their own press release on a major press release website.  What?  This is a bad thing?  Grabbing a higher spot for your press release than you are able to grab for your site, capturing those searchers, pre-selling them with your press release – this is a bad thing?  Build some backlinks to the release.

2. Your link is all alone in its niche, among others from other niches. For instance on a page of automotive links, yours is the only link to a garage-door-opener-kit website.  This page gives you link juice, but none of your competitors.  Build some backlinks to the page.

3. You discover your link on a non-indexed page, a page that Google and Bing are unlikely to find or that has so little link juice that it is unlikely to count for much.  Wouldn’t it be great if that link counted? Build some backlinks to the page.

You got the links.  They are a competitive advantage for your website.  Why not make them really count?

    Hi Garrett.

In fact, a guest post really fits neatly into the first item above. It would be to my benefit as much as to DailySEOtips to have this page rank well for searches related to backlinks. It could also have fit into the second item, although I see now that I perhaps might have defined that one too narrowly.

Great post. There’s no point leaving your backlinks to stand alone, especially when you’ve paid for a press release or put the effort in to a guest blog post. The more pages relating to YOUR business you have on a SERP, the better.

I would love to hear more about finding backlinks on unindexed pages.

I’ve been using the Market Samurai tool to find quality (P5+) back links for my main site for awhile now. Only recently have I begun working on getting back links to my new .Mobi site. I’ve read where the same (or similar) SEO rules apply to mobile websites. Are you of the same opinion and if not, what are the new rules for bulding back links to Mobile Website Builder sites?

Yes, i like the idea of optimizing your own backlinks, actually been doing for a long time. When i submit an article, do a guest post or find a backlink somewhere, i do optimize it. I submit it to directories or bookmark them on social sites or sometimes just link them from another of my own site.

This is not only about the search engines finding the page, but once the page itself gets the authority, the value of the backlink increase a lot :)

This is a bit like having a page for top industry links for a specific niche. Your outbound link neighbourhood still has a place in the algo.

Great post! I don’t think this is a tactic that many blog or website owners would think to employ. We often have our press releases outrank certain keywords which is fine by us. Having a highly ranked press release only builds your credibility. Interesting idea though to “scratch the back” of your backlinks. Thanks!

As I have just started to build a new website, I am learning more and more the importance of backlinks. Great information!

Thanks for the food for thought! I really hadn’t thought about adding link juice to your backlinks. I guess I have been a bit greedy and have just wanted all links to point to my site!

    Hi David,

I like point no.2 after all who would want to
backlink to a page that promotes their competitors
as well but if you picking the right one like you
suggests sounds a great idea and I’ve got to start
    doing that,

    Thanks

Very true, I completely agree with your post and valuable suggestion you provided in the post. Back links are the most important aspects of the SEO and to have a high quality back links are very important for the good position over the search engines.

It is true that that people will do almost any thing for back links. It is important that you find easy or simple ways to gain good back links instead of some methods which you have mentioned above.
