Using Google Suggest to Drive More Traffic and Build your Brand

*This is a guest tip by Kevin Kaiser.*

What’s better than doing quality SEO and building your brand at the same time? When people start searching your brand name, you know you’re doing something right and that’s normally a good sign. But when you search your brand name, do other suggestions come up?

Slowly type your brand name or some other big keyword that seems to bring you traffic and see what else Google suggests. Go ahead, try it. I’ll wait a sec.

Now that you’re back, did you see anything that you weren’t really aware of? Yes! That’s great. Now that you know, you should just forget about doing this little experiment. Seriously, don’t worry about the rest of what I have to say and how it will boost your SEO campaign and your brand.

If you’re still with me, let’s delve into how Google suggest can actually ‘suggest’ keywords that you should target. I like real world examples so I’ll go ahead with one. I help VAMortgageCenter.com out with their SEO every once and a while. Typing into Google search, ‘vamortgagecenter.com’, you’ll see that Google suggests searching ‘vamortgagecenter.com reviews’. And guess what, Google has great mind control over people. The term is actually searched a good number of times. This insight leads to the creation of the VAMortgageCenter.com Reviews page. And now we can own the SERPs for that term.

This also helps with online branding as well. For us, it’s nice because there aren’t many bad reviews (that I’ve came across), so it’s not that we were losing business from not having our own review page. But having a customer review page on your own site will certainly help improve any business credibility. Other consumers like to see what kind of experience previous consumers had with a firm.

Now take this tactic and try it with your brand name keyword and see what comes up. Then, if you don’t own the SERPs for that page, do something about it. If a suggestion is ‘XXXX sucks’, it might not fit to make XXXXX.com/sucks.html. Instead, try buying XXXXsucks.com and put some quality content that explains why some people think you suck and also give good (they need to be real here though) reviews by past customers.

This is a great suggestion. Usually there are not too many surprises doing this, but occasionally a few topics that you have never considered before come up. Since it’s Google that is providing clickable items, it makes sense that this would bring you to areas you should be covering. It pays to give Google Suggest just a little time to surprise you.

Do extensive research while selecting your keyword phrases. Once armed with keyword intelligence that’s relevant to your niche, you have the unique ability to create highly-relevant content that aids your site visitors and enhances your credibility. You’re speaking the language of the audience after all, and satisfying their needs. You can take the help of some advanced research tools such as Wordtracker, KeywordDiscovery, or even Googles Keyword Tool to find the optimal phrases for your site.
